Jailbreaking, also referred to as "hacking", enables you to do many things your device won't let you do normally, like access the filesystem, install unsigned apps, and modify system files. Contrary to popular belief, jailbreaking does not void your warranty. Just remember to unjailbreak it before you make an appointment at the Apple Store!
